Songoftheday 4/8/21 - I know you're going I can't make you stay, I can only let you know I love you any way...

from the album Traces Of My Lipstick (1998)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's song of the day comes from the female R&B vocal group Xscape, whose sophomore album Off The Hook had spun off two big pop hits with the top ten hit "Who Can I Run To" as well as the top-40 predecessor "Feels So Good". They also appeared on top-40 hits from rapper MC Lyte ("Keep On Keepin' On") and vocal group Ol' Skool ("Am I Dreaming"). That latter song also appeared on Xscape's third album Traces Of My Lipstick. The "lead" single from that set, though, would be the classy breakup ballad "The Arms Of The One Who Loves You". Written by song doctor supreme Diane Warren and produced by Celine Dion's go-to Guy Roche, the greeting card-ready missive had Kandi Burruss, Tiny Harris, and Tamika and LaTocha Scott with a lush background instead of new jack swing bears as they let their soon-to-be-ex know that they can come back to them when they're hurt again. You just want to yell "don't degrade yourselves with this! let him go!"...

"The Arms Of The One Who Loves You" became Xscape's fourth top ten pop hit in May of 1998. The song also climbed to #4 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart. Internationally, the single was their biggest hit in New Zealand at #16, while landing just outside the top-40 in the UK at #46. The Traces Of My Lipstick album came in at #28 on the Billboard 200 sales list, their third top-40 set, and #6 on the R&B albums list.
