Songoftheday 10/2/21 - I've known a few guys who thought they were pretty smart, but you've got being right down to an art...

from the album Come On Over (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 16

Today's song is from Shania Twain, whose third album Come On Over bridged the gap between country and pop music in a massive way, already scored four top-40 pop hits that were also top ten country hits with "Love Gets Me Every Time", "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)", "You're Still The One", and "From This Moment On", along with another song, "Honey I'm Home", which topped the country charts but was promoted on pop radio. There also was a track, "When", which was only released as a single in the UK and her native Canada, where it peaked at #18 in the former and #14 in the latter's singles chart. The sixth American single from the Come On Over record was the sassy rock-country track "That Don't Impress Me Much". Written by Twain and her producer slash husband Robert "Mutt" Lange, who brought his experience with such pop-metal acts like Def Leppard to full force here, Twain flicks of potential boyfriends like gnats for different reasons, including the classic "you think you're Brad Pitt" line, but all for being into themselves more than into her. It's brash without being brash, and commanding attention without demanding to be taken care of, much like Shania's life herself (look it up, it's interesting). There's barely a waft of country in this song, but Twain's undeniable popularity meant that country radio couldn't deny it, and then later, mainstream radio bought in. The music video again brings her iconic "leopard outfit" in the desert that most people of that time identify her with...

"That Don't Impress Me Much" became Shania's fifth top-40 hit from Come On Over, and her third and so far final one to reach the American pop top ten, in June of 1999. It first was a hit on country radio, where it peaked at #8 that February. The song also went to #8 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary, or "easy listening", radio chart, and #6 on their older-skewing Adult Top-40 format list. Internationally, the single topped the charts in Ireland, Norway, Belgium, and New Zealand, and made the top ten in Australia (#2), the Netherlands (#2), the UK (#3), Sweden (#3), Austria (#3), Finland (#3), Denmark (#4), Canada (#5), Switzerland (#6), Germany (#8), Spain (#9), and Hungary (#10). Shania and the Come On Over album will return to the series.

There was a "dance mix" that got a lot of attention on mainstream pop stations...

Here's Shania performing the song in its original form live in concert in Miami in 1999....

While in her Chicago tour in 2003 she used the "dance mix" arrangement...

Fast forward to her Vegas residency in 2015...

and finally, doing an acoustic take for Good Morning America in 2020...

As a bonus, here's Shania talking about coming up with the "you think you're Brad Pitt" line...

Up tomorrow: Country singer is possibly writing a postcard.
