Songoftheday 2/13/21 - You're so complicated you hang over my shoulder when I read my mail, I don't appreciate it when I talk to other guys you think they're on my tail...

from the album Come On Over (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #40 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1

Today's song of the day comes from Canadian singer Shania Twain, whose lead single from her third album Come On Over, the #1 country hit "Love Gets Me Every Time", sold enough to make it to the pop top-40 chart in the fall of 1997.  The second single from the album would be the uptempo "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)". Written by Shania with husband/producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, the track has Twain assuaging a paranoiac lover's fears of her fidelity, assuring them that even though they act like a nutcase, she still is in love. The prominent fiddles firmly planted the song on country radio, even though Lange's production is more like Garbage's "Stupid Girl" than Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man". But nevertheless, this really was the apex of her country crossover work...

"Don't Be Stupid" became Shania's third single to reach Billboard magazine's pop Top 40 in January of 1998. The single also climbed to #6 on their Country Songs chart. Internationally, with the help of a dance revamp that removed almost every ounce of "country music" from it (save the fiddles), the single was her first worldwide success, reaching the top ten in the UK (#5), Hungary (#5), Romania (#5), and Belgium (#6F). It also made the top-40 in Ireland (#15), the Netherlands (#19), Australia (#32), and Sweden (#39).
