Disco Dessert 2/13/21 - "Empires" from Lamya...

 

 

"Empires" was a big club hit for Lamya, who was born in the Middle Eastern country of Oman and raised in Kenya. Appearing on her sole album Learning From Falling, the song was written by the singer, and produced by Soul II Soul's Nellee Hooper (she had been a part of that group in the 1990s). On Billboard magazine's Dance Club Play chart, the single spent a week at #1 in 2002. Sadly, Lamya died of a heart attack in 2009. The song was inspired by a poem called The Coming American by Sam Walter Foss.
