Songoftheday 6/10/21 - Caramel eyes chocolate thighs, your honey brown complexion makes my nature rise...
"I Can Do That" - Montell Jordan
from the album Let's Ride (1998)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10
Today's song of the day comes from R&B singer Montell Jordan, who just missed landing his second #1 hit by a notch in the spring of 1998 with the title track to his third album Let's Ride. His follow-up release would be "I Can Do That", written by the singer and produced by Teddy Bishop. The track rolls like an R. Kelly record with a hint of the Bone Thugs-n-Harmony sing-talking, with the slow back-and-forth rhythm driving the lyrics about being able to get down with a lady who's man isn't satisfying her. In the days were a lot of pop and rock tracks would withhold the retail single to goose the sales of the album, this one, like a lot of R&B hits, became successful because it had remixes of the previous hit on it. The music video has Montell as a supposed hologram creation, with the added touch saying he has Denzel Washington's eyes and Wesley Snipes' body...
"I Can Do That" became the second top-40 pop hit from Let's Ride in September of 1998. The song also rose to #4 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart. Another track from Let's Ride, "When You Get Home", wasn't released as a single commercially, but got enough urban radio plays to place at #74 on Billboard's R&B Airplay chart, with a music video released for it with Billy Dee "Lando Calrissian" Williams.
