Robbed hit of the week 6/7/21 - Cam'ron's "Horse & Carriage"...

"Horse & Carriage" - Cam'ron featuring Mase
from the album Confessions Of Fire (1998)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #41

This week's "robbed hit" comes from rapper Cameron Giles, who records under the moniker Cam'ron, who grew up in Manhattan, New York, before pursuing a music career after childhood friend and rapper Mase hooked him up with the Notorious B.I.G., who in turn linked Cam'ron to Lance Rivera's Untertainment label. In 1998, after a promo single that never saw release, "Pull It" with DMX, got enough airplay to spend a couple of weeks on Billboard magazine's R&B Airplay chart, peaking at #66, the rapper released his debut single "357" a month later.  That song, which interpolated the theme from Miami Vice and also was in the movie Woo with Jada Pinkett, kind of stiffed, stalling at #88 on the R&B chart. That was quickly followed by "Horse & Carriage", which reunited Cam'ron with Mase on the track. The song caught fire on urban radio, and in turn found itself rising up the pop Hot 100 as well, helped by a remix that sample another TV theme song, this time from the sitcom Night Court, and had Wyclef Jean, Big Pun,Charli Baltimore, and Silkk The Shocker on it, which Baltimore making a shady rhyme about not needing Mase (who wouldn't appear in the video unless he was paid)...

While "Horse & Carriage" rose all the way to #9 on Billboard's R&B chart, the single stopped right under the top-40 on the pop Hot 100 in August of 1998. The song also got to #9 on the Rap Singles chart as well. Internationally, it was a decent hit in the UK, peaking at #12. Cam'ron's debut album Confessions of Fire, was released in July of that year, and crested at #6 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and #2 on the R&B albums list, going on to sell over a half million copies.

A third offering from Confessions Of Fire, "Feels Good", featured red-hit singer Usher, but stalled down at #54 on the R&B chart while not even placing on the pop list.
