Robbed hit of the week 2/3/20 - Shai's "Come With Me"...

"Come With Me" - Shai
from the album Blackface (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #43

This week's "robbed hit" comes from R&B group Shai, who after landing a trio of top ten pop hits from their debut album If I Ever Fall In Love, scored another top-40 pop/R&B hit with "The Place Where You Belong" from the movie Beverly Hills Cop III in the summer of 1994. But it would be over a year from that for the quartet to return with their second studio album Blackface, which did include the soundtrack hit. The next single released from the record would be the ballad "Come With Me", written by the group and an attempt to recapture the love jams from their first record and the harmonies that made the group so so special...

While "Come With Me" was able to climb to #15 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, the single stalled a couple notches under the pop top-40 in November of 1995. A third release from the record, "I Don't Wanna Be Alone", stopped at #51 on the R&B list and slipped on the pop Hot 100 at #89. Dropped by their MCA-affiliated label, the group released a couple of indie albums before splintering apart. Members Darnell Van Rensalier and Garfield Bright remain in the act, whose latest album Musically Yours (featuring a couple redos of past hits) came out in 2018.
