"The Place Where You Belong" - Shai
from the album Beverly Hills Cop III (Original Soundtrack) (1994) and Blackface (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #34 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song of the day comes from the soul vocal group Shai, whose debut album If I Ever Fall In Love scored three top ten pop hits with "Baby I'm Yours", "Comforter", and the #2 smash "If I Ever Fall In Love". In 1994, the group returned with a single taken from the soundtrack to the Eddie Murphy cinema juggernaut Beverly Hills Cop III, "The Place Where You Belong". Written by the band's members Garfield Bright, Marc Gay, Carl Martin, and Darnell Van Rensalier, the smooth adult soul has a subtle new jack swing beat in the background. The song was released as a single after Patti Labelle's "The Right Kind of Lover", which hit #8 on the R&B chart, topped Billboard's dance chart, and stopped at #61 on the American pop Hot 100, and Eazy E's "Luv 4 Dem Gangsta's", which bubbled under the pop chart at #103. It became the biggest hit from the movie...

"The Place Where You Belong" became Shai's fourth and so far most recent top-40 pop hit in July of 1994. The song also climbed to #21 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart. It would also serve as the lead single from Shai's sophomore full-length album Blackface. The second single from the set, "Come With Me", peaked at #15 on the American R&B chart, and stopped at #43 on the pop Hot 100 (It also went to #25 in New Zealand). That was followed by "I Don't Wanna Be Alone", which climbed to #51 on the R&B list, #89 on the pop Hot 100, and again not a blink on my American ears.

Also, the Tony Toni Tone' production "Leavin'", that made the Beverly Hills Cop III movie and soundtrack which stopped at #41 on the R&B chart. while it was on the pop list at #92.

The next album from Shai, Destiny, went no where, and they've put out a couple more albums in the eighties and nineties.
