"Don't Take The Girl" - Tim McGraw
from the album Not A Moment Too Soon (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13
Today's song of the day comes from then country-music newcomer Tim McGraw, who had landed a huge hit with the now very un-PC "Indian Outlaw" in the spring of 1994. That could easily have been a one-and-done fluke leaving McGraw a one-hit-wonder like so many country acts, but luckily he had an ace up his sleeve, quickly following that up with the ballad that would become just as popular, "Don't Take The Girl". A story song about a kid growing up and realizing the worth of a woman, the ballad was written by Larry Johnson and Craig Martin, and produced by Byron Gallimore and James Stroud...
"Don't Take The Girl" became Tim's second top-20 pop hit, mostly due to the massive sales of the cassette single, in June of 1994. The ballad with his first to reach #1 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart. The third release from Not A Moment Too Soon, the uptempo line-dance ditty "Down On The Farm", climbed to #2 for three week on the country chart, followed by the title track "Not A Moment Too Soon", which landed Tim a second country #1 hit for two weeks. Finally, with the fifth single "Refried Dreams", he almost landed back on the pop Hot 100, "bubbling under" the chart at #106, while peaking at #5 on the country airplay list.
