Songoftheday 2/10/20 - Hey you you're a child in my head you haven't walked yet, your first words have yet to be said...
"Blessed" - Elton John
from the album Made In England (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #34 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7
Today's song of the day is from Elton John, whose album Made In England had already spun off a top-20 pop hit in America in the spring of 1995 with the grandiose ballad "Believe". He released the title track "Made In England" as a follow-up, but the song sputtered out at #52 on the American pop chart, although it climbed to #12 on the Adult Contemporary list, while remixes of the song helped him return to the dance chart at #13. It did much better in Canada, peaking at #5, while in the titular England the song stopped at #18. To try to reverse fortunes, a different single was released in the U.S. and worldwide than from the UK. "Blessed", written by Elton and longtime partner Bernie Taupin, was a simple and lovely ballad that could either be literally or metaphorically talking about a child's innocence...
"Blessed" became the second top-40 pop hit in America from Made In England in December of 1995. The song was a huge hit on "easy listening" radio, spending five weeks at #2 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary radio chart, and getting to #6 on the newly-created Adult Top-40 format list. Internationally, the single went to #3 in Canada, and peaked at #21 in Belgium. Meanwhile, in the UK, the song "Please" was released, which peaked at #33 there.
