Songoftheday 10/14/19 - We don't even talk anymore and we don't even know what we argue about, don't even say I love you no more 'cause saying how we feel is no longer allowed...

"Water Runs Dry" - Boyz II Men
from the album II (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 25

Today's song of the day comes from the soul vocal group Boyz II Men, whose sophomore album II had already spun off two massive pop hits with the then-record-breaking #1 "I'll Make Love To You" and second chart-topper "On Bended Knee". But the third release from the album, "Thank You", was a relative disappointment, missing the pop top-20 in the spring of 1995. The fourth single from the set would bring another sure thing, a gentle love ballad with "Water Runs Dry". Written and produced by Babyface, the record was for me the most enjoyable of the singles on II since it combines the gentle acoustic guitar work that grace's Babyface's hits with the vocal harmony work without seeming like acappella...

"Water Runs Dry" almost gave the group a third #1 pop hit from the album, stopping at the runner-up spot in June of 1995. The song also spent a week at #3 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, while making it to #4 on their R&B singles tally. Internationally, the single peaked at #4 in Canada, while reaching the top-40 in New Zealand (#19), the UK (#24), and Australia (#36).

The fifth and final release from II, "Vibin'", was a moderate R&B success at #27 on that tally, while on the pop top-100 it topped out in the lower half of the list at #56, even with a non-album remix featuring rappers Method Man, Busta Rhymes, and Craig Mack.
