Songoftheday 10/3/19 - Maybe I don't really wanna know how your garden grows, 'cause I just wanna fly...

"Live Forever" - Oasis
from the album Definitely Maybe (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: ineligible to chart
Billboard Hot 100 Airplay peak: #39 (one week)
Weeks in the Hot 100 Airplay Top-40: 2

Today's song of the day comes from the British alternative rock band Oasis, who came together when members of the Manchester band Rain first recruited lead singer Liam Gallagher to front them after booting their original vocalist - Liam changed the band name straightaway to "Oasis" - and then adding his brother Noel who was an up and coming songwriter. After distributing a demo record, the band's fortunes changed when they met up with Alan McGee, who owned Creation Records, who signed Oasis in Britain (they inked with Sony worldwide). Their first official single, "Supersonic", went to #31 on the British singles charts, while almost reaching the top ten on the American Alternative Rock radio chart at #11 (the song also peaked at #24 in Ireland and #33 in France, while climbing to #38 on Billboard magazine's Mainstream Rock check.). A second release, "Shakermaker", stopped short of the British top ten at #11, but legal quibbles over its comparison to the pop schmaltz Coke-commercial song "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" by the New Seekers caused it not to be promoted much anywhere else. But it would be their third offering that would give the Gallaghers and Oasis their first pop success and breakthrough hit in America. "Live Forever" featured original mates Paul Arthurs on guitar, Tony McCarroll as the drummer, and bassist Paul McGuigan pushing a very late-60s Beatles'-style psychedelic rock groove written by Noel Gallagher with Liam singing sardonically...

"Live Forever" granted Oasis their first top ten pop hit in the UK at #10, but since the song was not released as a physical single in the U.S., they were disallowed from appearing on Billboard's Hot 100 pop chart, though it spent a couple of weeks in the top-40 of the airplay component of the list. The single spent two weeks at #2 on Billboard magazine's Modern Rock/Alternative radio chart, while cresting at #10 on the Mainstream Rock format tally. A fourth release from the set promoted in America, "Rock N Roll Star", went to #38 on the Alternative Rock radio lists. Meanwhile, the glam-style album track "Cigarettes & Alcohol" continued their rise in Britain, peaking at #7 on the UK singles chart.
