Songoftheday 10/24/19 - Did I tell you how much I miss your sweet kiss? Did I tell you I didn't cry well I lied...
"Wonderful" - Adam Ant
from the album Wonderful (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #39 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 2
Today's song of the day comes from British new wave troubadour Adam Ant, who had made a brief comeback in the spring of 1990 with the top-20 pop hit "Room At The Top" on MCA Records. However, a follow-up album produced by Bernard Edwards of Chic was rejected by the record company, and it would not be until 1995 that Adam returned with another label (EMI) and another attempt to reinvent himself as a more standard adult rock singer. "Wonderful", the title track from their set written by the artist with longtime collaborator Marco Pirroni and song doctor Bonnie Hayes (who wrote a couple tracks on Bonnie Raitt's Nick Of Time record), was warmly recieved, and gave him his most recent success in the States...
"Wonderful" became Adam Ant's third and most recent top-40 pop hit in the U.S. in June of 1995. The song also climbed up to #7 on Billboard magazine's Alternative/Modern Rock radio chart, and spent four weeks on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") format list, peaking at #39. Internationally, the single was big in Canada, going as high as #9, while it got to #32 in his native Britain. A second single from the record, "Gotta Be A Sin", missed the top-40 in the UK at #45, while stiffing totally in the States.
After this, Adam spent years in turmoil, between getting trouble with the law, having mental illness issues, and attempting to restart his music career. Finally in 2012 he re-emerged with his first album in years, Adam Ant Is The Blueblack Hussar in Marrying The Gunnar's Daughter. The set, with help with buzz tracks like "Cool Zombie", climbed to #25 on the British albums chart. Most recently, he toured performing his classic album Kings of the Wild Frontier, and hypes an upcoming hits tour that hasn't come to pass yet.
