Songoftheday 8/2/19 - Can we go back to the days our love was strong? Can you tell me how a perfect love goes wrong?

"On Bended Knee" - Boyz II Men
from the album II (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (six weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 25

Today's song of the day comes from the pop/R&B vocal group from Philadelphia, Boyz II Men, who had tied the record for longest stay at #1 in the summer and fall of 1994 with the Grammy-winning "I'll Make Love To You". While that song was in its 13th of 14 weeks at #1 on Billboard's pop Hot 100 chart, their follow-up, "On Bended Knee" raced on to the chart all the way up at #14. A make-up ballad written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis of Flyte Tyme, the song was so immediately embraced that even after all that time at #1 they ended up replacing themselves at the top of the chart for another month and a half...

"On Bended Knee" became Boyz II Men's third #1 pop hit in America in December of 1994. The song spent two weeks at #2 on Billboard's R&B chart, while also crossing over to their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") format tally at #8. Internationally, the single topped the Canadian chart for three weeks, and peaked at #4 in New Zealand and #7 in Australia. They also made the top-40 in the UK (#20), Belgium (#20), the Netherlands (#21), Ireland (#24), and France (#34).
