Songoftheday 8/17/19 - If he loved you like I love you I would walk away in shame, I'd move town I'd change my name...
"When We Dance" - Sting
from the album Fields Of Gold: The Best of Sting 1984-1994 (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #38 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1
Today's song of the day comes from singer/bassist/songwriter and former Police frontman Sting, who had landed his sole solo-billed #1 hit with his collaboration with Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart, "All For Love", in the beginning of 1994. Sting finished that same year with a collection of his solo hits to that point, Fields Of Gold, named for the top-40 hit he had from his previous album Ten Summoner's Tales in the summer of 1993. Along with a dozen of his most popular solo songs, there were two new selections unreleased until the set. Both were released as singles. The first, "When We Dance", was a muted but classy piece that just relies on the song and no new gadgets...
"When We Dance" returned Sting to the American pop top-40 in December of 1994. The song also climbed to #12 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart in Billboard magazine. Internationally, the single peaked at #9 in the UK as well as Ireland, topped out at #10 in Canada, and was a top-40 hit in the Netherlands (#32), Sweden (#34), and Belgium (#35). Sting was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1996 for "When We Dance" in the Best Male Pop Vocal category, losing to Seal for his sublime "Kiss From A Rose".
The second new song from Fields Of Gold, the more upbeat "This Cowboy Song", missed any of the American radio charts, but got to #15 in the UK, #19 in Ireland, and #34 in Canada.
