Songoftheday 7/24/13 - Welcome to the human race with its wars, disease and brutality you with your innocence and grace restore some pride and dignity to a world in decline...

The Pretenders - "Show Me"
from the album Learning To Crawl (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #28 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's Song of the Day is by the bi-national punk-pop group the Pretenders, who recouped from the death of half of their original group members with the reflective top-5 hit "Back On The Chain Gang", then followed it up with the rollicking "Middle Of The Road". The third single released from their Learning To Crawl effort was "Show Me", a midtempo jangler seemingly inspired by the birth of Chrissie's first child with the Kinks' Ray Davies...

"Show Me" reached the pop top-40 in the US in May of 1984, while becoming the fourth top-10 rock hit from the Learning To Crawl album at #8. But by the time of her next album Hynde would drop original drummer Martin Chambers and bassist Malcolm Foster from the lineup, again making the Pretenders a mere backing band for herself.

...but before that happened, here's the band as it was in 1984 live in Germany...

Up tomorrow: California new-wavers are speechless.
