Songoftheday 6/30/12 - Can't seem to get my mind off of you, back here at home there's nothing to do...
The Go-Go's - "Vacation"
from the album Vacation (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (three weeks)
Weeks in the top-40: 9
Today's Song of the Day is the first single off of the California girl-rockers Go-Go's sophomore album (consequently the first GoGos cassette I owned back then). The band was riding high off their #1 debut, Beauty And The Beat, which produced two top-20 hits with "Our Lips Are Sealed" and the #2 "We Got The Beat". Rather than follow that up with another track from that, they rush-released a new album, and "Vacation" became their second top-10er just in time for the summer of 1982...
"Vacation" also made the top-20 on the dance and rock charts as well, but it would be their last top-10 hit on the pop chart (though they got ever so close with the awesome "Head Over Heels"). In 2004, the song was hilariously used as the musical backdrop on Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 documentary on scenes of former President Bush playing golf.

Since then, the song has been covered a number of times,
Alt-rockers MxPx did a decent Blink-182-style version in 2009...
in 1995 the modern rock group the Frogs did their version on a tribute album...it's painful...
...but hard to compare to Kelly Clarkson from her From Justin To Kelly movie (oh yeah. you forgot, didn't you?)...
and to bring it down another notch, the Chipmunks rendered their version, sadly the one my niece heard first...
Oh lord.
Up tomorrow: the late great Queen Of Disco teams with Quincy Jones...
