The Go-Go's - "We Got The Beat"
from the album Beauty And The Beat (1981)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (3 weeks)

1982 was a good time for some girl-rock, as Joan Jett and the Go-Go's occupied the top two on the pop charts for 3 weeks. The Go-Go's, formed in South California by Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine, and Charlotte Caffrey (the latter writing "We Got The Beat"), first broke through in Britain, were retro-punk would later also deliver the Stray Cats back to the States. Releasing "We Got The Beat" as the second single after their debut "Our Lips are Sealed", It proved to be the band's biggest single success. And those drums! Rock finally returned to the dance floor without losing its edge.

Their Beauty and the Beat album managed to be a #1 album, even with only two singles released from it - quite a feat for a debut LP. The song would recently be covered by the cast of Glee, to of course more sanitzed results.

Next up tomorrow, I delve into an R&B legend's Musiquarium...
