"Bizounce" - Olivia
from the album Olivia (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song comes from Olivia Longott, who records under just her first name Olivia. The Brooklyn-born singer and rapper grew up in the New York City borough of Queens, where she took up music in school until she was signed by veteran business head Clive Davis to his new J Records label. Olivia's self-titled debut album was released in the late spring of 2001, with the lead single "Bizounce" coming out that March. Written by Olivia with producer Doug Allen, Dave Conley, and Quincy Patrick, the track has Olivia dismissing a rotten lover, a common theme in those years. Of course she boasts that she can take care of herself, and that she's coming to get her things and, as the title says, bouncing. The groove is nice though again common for that period, and while she rides it well, her cooing voice (like a female R. Kelly) doesn't have a chance to really shine in it. Nevertheless, the song caught on, becoming Olivia's first big success...

"Bizounce" became Olivia's first hit, reaching the top-20 on the Hot 100 in Billboard magazine in April of 2001. The song climbed to #4 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart, while on the radio it rose to #12 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format list. Internationally, the single hit #16 on the Canadian sales chart. The Olivia album, released in early June of that year, got to #55 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and #22 on the R&B Albums list.

A second single from the Olivia album, "Are U Capable", relied more on her rapping skills, stiffed, only "bubbling under" Billboard's R&B chart at #124. But Olivia will be back to the series two more times, with a little help from a friend.

The rap version of "Bizounce" rolls much harder, and does profile her skills to prove why the single sold so well...
