" Pop " - *NSYNC from the album Celebrity (2001) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #19 (three weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 7   Today's song comes from the vocal "boy-band" group *NSYNC , whose third studio album No Strings Attached became one of the largest-selling albums in American music history, selling over two million copies in its first week and eleven million overall. The set spun off three top ten pop hits with " Bye Bye Bye ", " This I Promise You ", and the #1 single " It's Gonna Be Me ".  At the close of 2000, the quintet released a one-off holiday song, " I Don't Wanna Spend One More Christmas Without You " for their label's Platinum Christmas collection, which went to #24 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart.   In the summer of 2001, JC Chasez, Justin Timberlake, Chris Kirkpatrick, Lance Bass, and Joey Fatone returned with what would end up being ...

At the beginning of the summer of the following year, Lonestar returned with their next regular studio album, I...

" There You'll Be " - Faith Hill from the album Pearl Harbor (Original Soundtrack) (2001) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 9   Today's song comes from country music star Faith Hill , whose fourth studio album Breathe had scored three hits in the top-40 on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart, with " If My Heart Had Wings ", " The Way You Love Me ", and " Breathe ", with the latter becoming the biggest "pop" hit in the trade bible for 2000. However that massive mainstream success created a bit of resentment in Nashville, for some reason (ahem, the patriarchy ), even though her husband Tim McGraw had a lot of pop success without consequences (at least for awhile). Her next move probably didn't help much - a Diane Warrren-written power-ballad for the Ben Affleck movie Pearl Harbor in the spring of 2001. "There You'll Be", produced by Trevor Horn (of Yes and the Buggles) and By...

After an EP (extended play single) release Let Me Tell You About Root Beer , the group put out  their debut full-length album Fungus Amongus independently in 1995, with their first music video " Take Me To Your Leader ". With the buzz generated from those two sets, Incubus was signed to Immortal Records in the Sony Distribution arm. Adding DJ/turntablist Gavin "DJ Lyfe" Koppell, they released a second EP, Enjoy Incubus , with mostly re-recorded versions of Fungus songs with DJ Lyfe scratching on top, in the beginning of 1997, as they ope...

A single from the short set, " Brothers & Sisters ", popped on to the British Singles Chart for a week at #92 in 1999.     " My Baby " - Lil' Romeo from the album Lil' Romeo (2001) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 10   Today's song comes from rapper Romeo Miller , who originally recorded under the name Lil' Romeo. The son of Percy "Master P" Miller, the head of the No Limit Records franchise, and Sonya C, a rapper in Master P's supergroup TRU. Naturally, with them along with uncles Silkk The Shocker and C-Murder, Romeo entered the rap game, and did it quite young, brought on No Limit sub-label Soulja at an absurdly young age, and releasing his debut album Lil' Romeo when he was just eleven. The lead single from the record was "My Baby", which his dad must've paid bank to get the sample of the Jackson Five's "I Want You Back" to use as a backdrop (the songwriting credits only include the writers of that song). The lyrics have the usual boasting, with Romeo dropping names of his famous relatives, before ...

Disco Dessert 9/24/22 - "The Mexican" by Jellybean...

Image
"The Mexican" was a big from hit for DJ/remixer/producer John "Jellybean" Benitez. Appearing on his debut album Wotupski!?! , the record was a remake of the club hit by the Bombers from 1978, which in itself was a cover of a rock song from the British rock band Babe Ruth written by Alan Shacklock from 1972. Jellybean's version featured vocals from Jenny Haan. On Billboard magazine's Dance/Disco Top-80, the single spent a week at #1 in 1984,

"     " What It Feels Like For A Girl " - Madonna from the album Music (2000) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (three weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 4   Today's song is from Madonna , whose eighth studio album Music had already spun off two big hits with the #1 " Music " and the follow-up " Don't Tell Me ", which made the top five on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in the beginning of 2001. The third single pulled from the set was "What It Feels Like For A Girl". Written by Madonna with producer Guy Sigsworth and David Torn, the song continues that album's experimentation of combining electronic elements to acoustic instrumentation in a dance-pop setting. The lyrics tackle the misogynistic belittling of feminine characteristics, and doesn't pull any punches from the get-go, with a sampled speech from actress Charlotte Gainsbourg saying it's ok for a young girl to be a "tomboy", "But for a boy to look like a gi...
