"Scar Tissue" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
from the album Californication (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 20

Today's song comes from the alternative rock back Red Hot Chili Peppers, who popped on to the American pop airplay top-40 at the beginning of 1997 with their cover of the funk classic "Love Rollercoaster" from the movie Beavis & Butthead Do America. During that time, guitarist Dave Navarro left the band, and John Frusciante, who played on the group's breakthrough album Blood Sugar Sex Magik reunited with Anthony Kiedis, Michael "Flea" Balzary, and Chad Smith for their seventh studio album Californication in 1999. The lead single from the set was "Scar Tissue", written by the band and produced by Rick Rubin. Based on the drug use that had plagued the band from the start, its lyrics and more vague in that aspect, associating the addiction to various women whose enticement seems more sexual than chemical. The music video has the battered crew driving in the desert...

"Scar Tissue" returned the Peppers to the top ten on Billboard magazine Hot 100 for the second time in October of 1999. The song spent four months (sixteen weeks) at #1 on Billboard's Alternative Rock radio chart (a record at the time) along with ten weeks on their Mainstream Rock list. It also crossed over to spend a half year on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format chart, peaking at #11, their first placing there. Internationally, the single topped the chart in Iceland, and reached the top ten in Poland (#2), New Zealand (#3), and Canada (#4). It also made the top-40 in Italy (#11), Belgium (#11F), the UK (#15), Australia (#15), Ireland (#16), Finland (#16), and the Netherlands (#38). The Californation album, released in June of that year, spent a week at #3 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, staying on the list for 101 weeks and selling over seven million copies. At the Grammy Awards in 2000, "Scar Tissue" won the Best Rock Song category, and was nominated for Rock Duo/Group Vocal Performance as well, losing out to Santana & Everlast's "Put Your Lights On". The Californication album was also nominated for Best Rock Album, which Santana also took home for his Supernatural set. Both the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Californication album will return to this series.
