Songoftheday 7/16/20 - Deep in my heart I'm concealing things that I'm longing to say, scared to confess what I'm feeling frightened you'll slip away...
"You Must Love Me" - Madonna
from the album Evita (Original Soundtrack) (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #18 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14
Today's song of the day is from Madonna, who had taken a turn after her eclectic album Bedtime Stories to deliver a big ballad top ten hit with "You'll See" in the closing of 1995. The following year, the singer worked on the film that would by many be the pinnacle of her acting career, the movie adaptation of the Broadway show Evita. Chronicling the live and loves or Argentine figurehead Eva Peron, the role was one Madonna had campaigned for, practiced singing for, and invested a big chunk of her celebrity capital in. With the cinematic version, composers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were reunited to create a new song, with the underlying hope that it would be able to be up for an Oscar as an original piece. "You Must Love Me" was the result, an emotional and soulbaring ballad of Eva's insecurity with husband Juan as well as the people of her country. It was a daring choice to release as a single, but her fans and the favorable reception of the film helped it land her back in the top-40 again...
"You Must Love Me" reached the top 20 on the American pop chart in November of 1996. The ballad placed on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (#15) and Adult Top-40 (#23) charts as well. Internationally, the single made the top ten in the Czech Republic (#3), Finland (#4), Italy (#5), Poland (#5), and the UK (#10). The song also reached the top-40 in Canada (#11), Australia (#11), Ireland (#21), and Iceland (#26), and missed by a notch in France (#41). As wished, "You Must Love Me" won the Oscar for Best Original Song, as it did the Golden Globe earlier for the soundtrack as well as for her acting. The Evita soundtrack went to #2 in the U.S. and #1 in Britain, eventually selling over two and a half million copies of the double-disc album in the States.
