Songoftheday 9/13/19 -Said if y'all don't mind can I talk about this woman I have? She's always complaining about the things she ain't got...
"If You Think You're Lonely Now" - K-Ci Hailey of Jodeci
from the album Jason's Lyric (Original Soundtrack) (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song of the day comes one K-Ci Hailey, who as one fourth of the new jack swing group Jodeci was riding well through the early 1990s, scoring five #1 R&B hits including "Cry For You", which also went to #15 on the pop chart in the beginning of 1994. He also notoriously dated Mary J. Blige in her early years, and by himself guested on her single "I Don't Want To Do Anything", which climbed to #86 on the R&B chart in 1993. In a break between album, K-Ci recorded a song for the soundtrack to the Jada Pinckett/Allan Payne movie Jason's Lyric. It was a cover of a song for soul veteran Bobby Womack, who co-wrote and produced "If You Think You're Lonely Now" for his album The Poet. The song spent four weeks at #3 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine, but got one notch away from the pop list, "Bubbling Under" the Hot 100 at #101...
K-Ci's version didn't stray far from the original, even including the spoken-word intro. In fact, the most memorable thing about his remake is that the production was sampled for Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" in 2005...
K-Ci's "If You Think You're Lonely Now" was released as the second single from the soundtrack after "U Will Know" by the multi-artist collaboration of Black Men United (which didn't have any Jodeci members in it). despite rushing into the pop top-20 in its second week, K-Ci didn't climb much higher, peaking within that level in March of 1995. The song just missed the R&B top ten, topping out at #11. A third release from Jason's Lyric, a cover of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love", managed to go to #10 at R&B, but fell below the pop Top-40 at #45.
As for K-Ci, he went back to Jodeci for one more album before splitting off with his brother Jo-Jo to form their own duo. He occasionally featured on other records, like Will Smith's single "Will 2K" which reached #25 on the pop Hot 100 in 1999. In 2006, K-Ci released a solo album, My Book. From it the single "Conversation (Can I Talk 2 U)" went to #84 at R&B.

And here's K-Ci performing the song live at a private party...
and lastly, live in concert in 2011...
Up tomorrow: An R&B newcomer shows off her nasty side.
