Songoftheday 9/28/19 - It's the D-R-E the spectacular In a party I go for your neck, so call me "Blacula"...
"Keep Their Heads Ringin'" - Dr. Dre
from the album Friday (Original Soundtrack)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 18
Today's song of the day comes from producer and rap artist Dr. Dre, whose first solo album after leaving the seminal hip-hop group N.W.A., The Chronic, had scored three top-40 pop hits with "Let Me Ride", "Dre Day", and the #2 hit "Nothing But A G Thing". After that Dre helmed the debut album from his friend Snoop Dogg, Doggystyle, that became equally as successful, with two more top ten pop hits in "Gin & Juice" and "What's My Name?". He then co-produced a soundtrack to the short-form movie Murder Was The Case, which featured Snoop on the title track (which went to #67 on the pop airplay chart) as well as Dre himself on "Natural Born Killaz" with N.W.A. bandmate Ice Cube, which nearly made the top-40 in the UK, peaking at #45 in 1994.
The next year saw Dre gifting another song to a movie, this time for Ice Cube's comedy Friday, which came out in the spring of 1995. His contribution, the hard-hitting "Keep Their Heads Ringin'", was released as the sole single from the soundtrack which went to top Billboard's album sales chart, no doubt due to the popularity of this song, which interpolates the song "Funk You Up", which was a top-20 R&B hit for the female trio Sequence in 1979. The music video features stars from the movie like Chris Tucker...
"Keep Their Heads Ringin'" became Dr. Dre's third top ten pop hit in April of 1995. The song also reached #10 on Billboard's R&B chart, while spending a week at #1 on their Rap Singles chart. Internationally, the single hit the top ten in New Zealand (#3), Sweden (#7), and Switzerland (#7), while reaching the top 40 in the Netherlands (#15), Belgium (#15), Germany (#23), the UK (#25), and France (#29).
