Songoftheday 9/12/19 - I was standing all alone against the world outside, you were searching for a place to hide...
"Love Will Keep Us Alive" - Eagles
from the album Hell Freezes Over (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: Ineligible to chart
Billboard Hot 100 Airplay peak: #22 (one week)
Weeks on the Top-40 of the Hot 100 Airplay chart: 18
Today's song of the day comes from the veteran country-rock group Eagles, whose unpredicted reunion, Hell Freezes Over, had granted the band a top-40 pop/top-10 rock hit in the fall of 1994 with "Get Over It". Another new song from the mostly live record that was promoted to country dancehall was "The Girl From Yesterday", which peaked on the country airplay chart at about the same time. The third song promoted to radio, and their genre successor. would be "Love Will Keep Us Alive". Written by rock vets Peter Frampton and Paul Carrack along with Peter Vale, the soft and easy track reminded many of their early 70s work, even though relative newbie Timothy B. Schmit (who came on in the late decade) sang lead on the record...
"Love Will Keep Us Alive" spent three weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio format chart in Billboard, but since the song was never released stateside as a commercially available physical single, it was not allowed on the Hot 100. But the song did gain enough mainstream radio to have it peak just under the pop top-20 in February of 1995. Internationally, the single went to #52 in the UK. After that, the track "Learn To Be Still" was offered to rock radio, where it peaked at #33, while going to #61 on the Hot 100 Airplay list in American, while going to #79 in Germany. In the beginning of 1996 "Love Will Keep Us Alive" was nominated for a Grammy Award for best Pop Duo/Group Vocal Performance, which ultimately went to Hootie & The Blowfish. In 2003 returned with an understand song "Hole In The World", which appeared on their revamped two-disc greatest hits set. It placed at #69 on the pop Hot 100 in America, so far their most recent hit on the Official American Pop Chart, while making it to #5 on the Adult Contemporary radio list and #38 on the Adult Top-40 format tally.
After another rather large break ending in 2005, the band went into the studio to record a proper album. The result, Long Road Out Of Eden, finally appeared in 2007. Two years prior, a track from the set, "No More Cloudy Days", spent a week at #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The next single in 2007, "How Long", went to #23 on the Country Singles chart, and won them a Grammy for Best Country Group Vocal. However it "bubbled under" the pop Hot 100 at #101. The third release from Long Road, "Busy Being Fabulous", went to #28 on the country chart and #12 on AC. That was followed by "What Do I Do With My Heart", which got a step lower at AC at #13. Lastly, "I Don't Want To Hear Anymore" topped out at #23 on the format. The band were going to record another studio record, but despite still touring that idea has been majorly hampered by the death of original member Glenn Frey in 2016.
