Songoftheday 9/29/19 - Walk blindly to the light and reach out for his hand, don't ask any questions and don't try to understand...

"I Believe" - Blessid Union Of Souls
from the album Home (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 23

Today's song of the day comes from the pop group Blessid Union Of Souls, who assembled in Cincinnati Ohio in the early 1990s. Led by lead singer Eliot Sloan and Jeff Pence on guitar, and recruiting drummer Eddie Hedges and former Ozzy Osborne keyboardist C.P. Roth. Releasing their debut album Home in 1995, the first single "I Believe" went from being a regional hit in the Midwest to a national pop smash. Written by Sloan, the track rode the thin "wave" of a cappella-ish songs that would send a myriad of groups like All-4-One, Boyz II Men, and 4PM to the top of the charts. This one had a little more grit though, being based on Sloan's relationship with a girl that was ended by her father because of his race...

"I Believe" became Blessid Union Of Souls' first and by far biggest pop hit, reaching the top ten in America in May of 1995. The song climbed to #5 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening" radio chart. Internationally, the single peaked at #6 in Canada and #7 in New Zealand, while reaching the top-40 in Australia (#18) and the UK (#29).
