Songoftheday 9/1/19 - O Mount Kailas uncover me, come my restoration, wash my body clean...

"In The House Of Stone And Light" - Martin Page
from the album In The House Of Stone and Light (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 26

Today's song of the day comes from British pop singer/songwriter Martin Page. Born in the southern city of Southampton, Page got his first success as a member of the new wave band Q-Feel. Their single "Dancing In Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop)", originally released in 1982, was a moderate hit on the Dance Club Play chart in Billboard magazine at #18, while "bubbling under" the pop Hot 100 at #110. Seven years later, a push by radio DJs helped it actually make the pop list at #75. Between those years, Page had established himself to be a successful songwriter, whether it be with Q-Feel bandmate Brian Fairweather or Elton John's go-to Bernie Taupin. With the latter he co-wrote "These Dreams" for Heart, as well as the work song in rock history, Starship's "We Built This City". He also co-penned "King Of Wishful Thinking" and "Faithful" for the British pop duo Go West.

In 1994, Page finally released a solo album of his own, In The House Of Stone And Light. The record also featured Fairweather as well as Q-Feel drummer Trevor Thornton. The title track and lead single from the record became Page's first and biggest success, pulling on the fans behind Amy Grant and Michael W Smith...

"In The House Of Stone and Light" became Page's first and only top-40 pop hit in May of 1995, eventually spending half a year (26 weeks) in the top-40. The second release from his album, "Keeper Of The Flame",  only went to #19 on the Adult Contemporary list, while stalling at #83 on the pop Hot 100. Since then he's been more active writing songs, but he has put out a string of indie albums, most recently The Amber Of Memory in 2018.

And tomorrow: Soul singers take some on the side.
