Rock Sweep: October 27, 2012...
Hey gang, it's time for part two of today's "chart sweeps" of the new songs making their way onto the music chart at Billboard magazine. This time it's the latest on rock radio, and I went into the magazine's changes last Saturday, which revamped the Rock Songs chart to include not only sales and internet streaming tallies, but also airplay from not only rock format radio but all genres of radio, which made the rock, country, and R&B charts completely screwy, diluting the reason to have genre charts to begin with. It looks like they've already got feedback on the rock end, since Train's "50 Ways To Say Goodbye", which jumped in to the new chart all the way at #4 last week, is no where to be seen this time out. But still for at least now I will cover just the radio airplay charts until that ridiculous crossover play rule is gone.
On the composite Rock Airplay chart, Mumford & Sons' "I Will Wait" stays at #1 for a third week.
The top debut here, at #37, is Adele's "Skyfall", whichis due to its huge pickup at Triple-A (hipster radio) stations, where the track debuts at #7. Adele's breakthrough "Rolling In The Deep" got to #15 on the old Rock Songs list last year, and #1 on the Triple-A list. I've covered this song so many time before, but needless to say its my favorite James Bond track in the last 20 years...

Michigan-based hard rock group Pop Evil come in at #49 with the fourth single from their latest album War Of Angels to make the Rock chart, "Purple". The second, "Monster You Made" has been their biggest so far, going to #22...
The last entry at #50 is the return of the biggest band in rock, the Rolling Stones, with "Doom And Gloom", from their upcoming 50th anniversary retrospective, GRRRR!, which collects 50 songs from their career (80 tracks on the "deluxe version"). Since the Rock Songs chart was around in 2009, the band has only placed one single here, "Plundered My Soul" from the re-released version of Exile On Main St. which made it to #42 in 2010...The new song reunites Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts for the first time since 2005..
Meanwhile, over on the Modern Rock radio subchart, Muse's "Madness" returns to the #1 position for a second nonconsecutive week.
The top arrival here is the third hit by New York alt-rock newbies fun., whose first two singles "We Are Young" and "Some Nights" both topped this list. "Carry On" drops in at #37...
Fellow pop-alt-rockers Neon Trees are in at #39 with "Lessons In Love (All Day, All Night)" featuring dance music DJ/producer Kaskade. Their debut, "Animal", went to #1 two years ago...
The last debut is by Welsh band the Joy Formidable, who had a top-10 alt-rock hit last year with "Whirring". Their latest, "This Ladder Is Ours", enters at #40...
On the Mainstream Rock radio sublist, Three Days Grace's "Chalk Outline" enjoys a sixth week at #1...
The top debut belongs to alt-metal outfit The Deftones, with "Tempest" at #32. It's from their upcoming album Koi No Yokan, which comes out in November. The band has reached the top-10 here twice, with "Change (In The House Of Flies)" in 2000 and "Diamond Eyes" in 2010...
California heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch went to #1 for the first time here with their last single, "Coming Down". The followup, "The Pride", comes in at #35...
Heavy Metal supergroup Hellyeah, which has members from groups like Mudvayne and Damageplan, are at #37 with "Drink Drank Drunk". They have so far taken two songs to #5 on this chart, "You Wouldn't Know" and "Hell Of A Time"...
The final debut here is by Vegas rockers Adelitas Way, with "Alive" at #38. It's the followup to their first #1 on this chart, "Criticize"...
At the Triple-A (Adult Album Alternative, or "hipster rock") chart, Mumford & Sons command an eighth week at #1 with "I Will Wait".
The aforementioned "Skyfall" by Adele is the top entry all the way at #7 (which makes me wonder "why isn't she on the "new" Rock Songs chart at all?")...
The other new entry is by British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, whose excellent debut single "The A Team" made it to #3 in July. The follow-up, from the album you must have, "+", is "Lego House" at #27...
On the Active Rock chart, Three Days Grace's aforementioned "Chalk Outline" spends a fifth week at #1...
The Deftones' "Tempest" comes in at #28. They took "Change (In the House Of Flies)" to #9...
Five Finger Death Punch arrive at #32 with "The Pride". "Coming Down" was also a #1 on this chart for the band.
Finally, over on the Heritage Rock subchart, Three Days Grace's "Chalk Outline" is at #1 for a second week.
Kid Rock debuts at #20 with "Let's Ride". His "Born Free" went to #10...
Aveneged Sevenfold are at #21 with "Carry On". They took both "Nightmare" and "So Far Away" to #6 on this list.
That's it for the rock side of the house....I'll be back in an hour and a half with the latest on R&B radio... Rock on!
