Brit Sweep: October 14, 2012...
Hey folks, the weekend's winding down, so time to check out the latest music over in England today, according to their official sales charts.
The top-selling song in the UK this week is by the Swedish House Mafia, who are embarked on a "final" tour worldwide, which is apt since they are having success everywhere with "Don't You Worry Child", featuring singer John Martin. It's their first #1 here, after two times at #4 with "Miami 2 Ibiza" and "Antidote". The boys sure know their way around making a rave track as accessible and anthemic as house music in the 90s was...

X Factor winner Leona Lewis is back with the second single from her just-released third album, Glassheart, "Trouble", featuring American actor/rapper Childish Gambino (Donald Glover from NBC's Community) at #7. Leona has topped the British charts three times, with her "coronation" single, "A Moment Like This", her US breakthrough "Bleeding Love", and her excellent cover of Snow Patrol's "Run". As usual Leona is flawless, she is one of if not the best voice ever to come from that show so far....
And now for more trouble, the fourth preview track from Taylor Swift's upcoming Red album, "I Knew You Were Trouble", enters at #23. This is the infamous "dubstep" track that has chart watchers waiting to see if Billboard allows it on the "Country Songs" chart, after the changes allowing all format airplay to count toward the country chart along with sales and streaming. As for the song, it's just like any other Sweden-born songs and could have been done by any other "popular" artist today...
Brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence from London call themselves Disclosure, and they score their first hit at #26 with "Latch" featuring DJ Sam Smith..I rather like the soulful vocals on this otherwise cool-temp song...
Another British electronica duo, AlunaGeorge, arrive at #50 with "Your Drums, Your Love". This is much more spacey and two-step influenced, and thinks it's way cool...
French filmmaker and experimental rock artist Woodkid gets his first hit at #57 with "Run Boy Run". The song made it to #52 in his home country, and as you would expect, the video clip for this is amazing...
Female rapper Angel Haze grew up in Michigan, but for her first hit at #58 she's all about "New York"...
Brazilian seranteja singer Michel Telo jumps in at #66 with his worldwide hit "Ai Se Eu Te Pego" ("Oh I Will Catch You" in Portuguese). It has already gone to #1 in over twenty countries, including France, Germany, and his homeland of Brazil...
British singer/musician Labrinth sees his sixth single from his debut album Electronic Earth reach the chart at #71. "Beneath Your Beautiful" featured Scottish songstress Emeli Sande, and it's tender and emotional to go well with Sande's awesome voice. Labrinth's "Earthquake" peaked at #2 last year, while Emeli did the same with two songs, "Next To Me" and "Heaven"...
French DJ Madeon debuts at #74 with "The City", his third song to make the chart in the UK. His first two went to the top-40, with "Icarus" peaking at #22, but this is in my opinion his best yet...
The last entry is an old song that never made the UK chart the first time. It's American glam-rock kings Kiss' foray into disco, "I Was Made For Loving You", with made it to #11 in the US, but missed the chart here in 1979. The reason for its renewed popularity is its inclusion in a British commercial for Costa Coffee...and I admit, it's really cute...
and here's the original, which is in at #94. The band had two top-10 hits, "Crazy Crazy Nights" and "God Gave Rock N Roll To You II" (ironically two minor hits in the US)...
Well that does it for tonight. Thanks again for dropping by, and check back tomorrow for another Song of the Day, Candletime, Part Two of this week's "album sweep", and the Robbed Hit of the week. Cheers!
