6 of the 60s: 10/24/12...

Hey gang, it's time for another half-dozen nuggets from the 1960s, and this week it's six from 1963, the year Da Vinci's Mona Lisa was shown in the United States for the first time in Washington, DC...As usual I've included links to buy the music on Amazon on MP3 or CD where available...

The Jaynetts - "Sally Go Round The Roses"
from the album Sally Go Round The Roses (1963)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2

The creepiest girl-group record apart from "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)", the Jaynetts warn a girl from going to the city and catching her cheating boyfriend, but the echoing vocals and clinky piano always felt like there was a worse fate waiting as well.

Bobby Vee - "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes"
from the album The Night Has A Thousand Eyes (1963)
Billboard Hot 100: #3

The North Dakota boy who filled in for Buddy Holly after that fateful plane crash was a bonified star by 1963, with this tale from the other side of the cheating tracks..

The Drifters - "Up On The Roof"
from the album Under The Boardwalk (1964)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5

Pop's true first "supergroup" had more classic singers than any other, and this nugget was the work of Ray Lewis..

Tom Glazer - "On Top Of Spaghetti"
from the album The Do-Re-Mi Children's Chorus (1963)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14

The folk singer who strived to bring science to kids via his music is ironically best known for this parody of "Old Smokey" that I remember having to sing in church school all the time.

Joe Harnell - "Fly Me To The Moon - Bossa Nova"
from the album Fly Me To The Moon and the Bossa Nova Pops (1963)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14

The Bronx-born musician who won a Grammy for this record went on to score the opening themes for The Bionic Woman and The Incredible Hulk.

Steve Lawrence - "Don't Be Afraid Little Darlin'"
from the album Don't Be Afraid Little Darlin' (Single) (1963)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #26

This little nugget from Steve Lawrence was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

Well that does it for this flashback....stay tuned, tonight I'll have the newest Down Under in Aussie Sweep, and tomorrow its more flashing back to the 70s and the 80s. Cheers!
