Soul Sweep: October 27, 2012...
Hey gang, it's time for the third installment of this week's "chart sweeps" of the newest songs making the weekly music charts at Billboard magazine. This time out it's the R&B charts, and it's the week after the drastic changes to the "R&B/HipHop Songs" chart that counted all radio airplay (format and crossover) as well as sales and internet streaming, and catapulted Rihanna's questionably R&B-supported "Diamonds" from #66 to #1, where it stays for a second week. I'm going to continue to use the R&B\HipHop Airplay chart, which for a while may be confusing because 1) chart history will reflect the "Songs" chart, and 2) five of the six new entries on the airplay list have already been on the Songs chart and covered...but of course in time that will even out. I really wish there was a true combined sales/airplay/internet R&B list that didn't count crossover airplay, but I guess that's a pipe dream. (I think it's telling that a whole bunch of more dance oriented singles storm on to the "recurrents" part of the chart, which will probably end up choking out true R&B that the format plays...)...But I'm going off on a true "Chart Geek" tangent, my apologies...
On the R&B/HipHop Airplay list, Miguel's "Adorn" hangs on for a sixth week (including the time on the regular "Songs" chart)...
The one truly new song on the chart at #70 is New York newcomer Bridget Kelly, with her first hit "Special Delivery" at #73. Its a really smooth slow-jam about a jilted lover, and it's a real good listen, the vocals are handled really well...

Meanwhile, over on the Adult R&B radio panel, Anita Baker's "Lately" remains on top for week number four.
There's one debut on this chart, and it's by 80s R&B powerhouse Karyn White, who had seven top-10 R&B hits between 1988 and 1994. Her first single to reach the "Urban AC" list is "Carpe Diem (Seize The Day)" at #37. It's the title track from her recent album, and it finds her in fine form, with a smokier voice and sassier attitude...
Coming up in 90 minutes I'll bring you the latest on country radio...Groove on!
