Brit Sweep: October 7, 2012...
Good afternoon, gang, it's Sunday evening, so time to head on over to the other side of the Atlantic to check out the newest songs selling over in the UK, according to their official music charts.
The top seller in Britain this week is the new single by Rihanna, who snags her seventh #1 credit here (six as a lead artist), dating back to 2000's "Umbrella", and so far the only one of the six leads to not be #1 in America (yet), "Diamonds"...

Next up is the British boyband phenomenon One Direction, who went from coming in third on the UK version of the X Factor to being to new New Kids on the Block for today's tweeners. Although really it's kind of early, since they only have one #1 hit so far (their debut, "What Makes You Beautiful"). Their next album will be proof of their (at least temporary) staying power, and the first single, "Live While We're Young" jumps in at #3...
One notch below 1D is their polar opposite musically in the pop world, Adele, with the theme song for the upcoming James Bond movie, Skyfall. Though like the boy band, she only so far has one chart topping single to her name, "Someone Like You". The new track, only available since Thursday, comes in all the way at #4...
The fourth song to debut in the top-5 this week is the new song by Ellie Goulding, who's biggest single in the UK so far has been her cover of Elton John's "Your Song" which went to #2 in 2010. Ironically, her biggest success in the States, "Lights", which went to #2, didn't even make the British top-40. Her latest, the first single from her upcoming album Halcyon, is "Anything Could Happen", and it arrives at #5...
The third promotional single from Taylor Swift's upcoming album Red is the title track, and it jumps on the list at #26...
Indie-dance group Other Tribe debut at #36 with their first single, "Skirts"...
Another act with their first hit is Compton-born rapper Kendrick Lamar at #63 with "Swimming Pools (Drank)"...
English singer/songwriter Jake Bugg's fourth single to make the UK top-100 is his biggest so far, as "Two Fingers" comes in at #66...
At #82 is American indie-rockers Walk the Moon with their first hit "Anna Sun"...
Chris Brown's third single from his latest album Fortune, "Don't Judge Me", punches its way up to #84 The first one, "Turn Up The Music", was his first #1 in the UK...
Cambridge indie-pop outfit Alt-J enters at #85 with the second top-100 hit from their debut album An Awesome Wave. "Breezeblocks" peaked at #75 earlier this year, and the new track is "Something Good"...
The final entry on the UK top-100 singles chart is by the London-based vocal group the Overtones, who I really like a bunch, with their second charting single, "Loving The Sound" ("Gambling Man" peaked at #82 two years ago). Their lack of singles-sales success though is misleading, since both their albums are top-10 hits. It seemed everyone wants a big chunk of them...
That does it for this week....Thanks for dropping by, and please check back tomorrow for another Song of the Day, Candletime, part two of this week's "Album Sweep", and this week's "robbed hit". Cheers!
