"You Got It (The Right Stuff)" - New Kids On The Block
from the album Hangin' Tough (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's song of the day comes from the "boy-band" vocal group New Kids On The Block, who struck it rich on their second album, landing a top-10 hit in the fall of 1988 with the ballad "Please Don't Go Girl". The second single from the record was the upbeat dance-pop of "You Got It (The Right Stuff)". Written and produced by Maurice Starr (who had discovered New Edition earlier in the decade), the single featured Jordan Knight and Donnie Wahlberg trading off lead vocals, with the rest woah-woah-ing along. The video had the 'kids' cavorting around in a convertible, as well as that shuffle-dance-thing that drove the girls wild...

"You Got It" became the Kids' second top-10 pop hit in March of 1988. The single also was their first to reach the top-40 on Billboard's R&B chart at #28. The 12" remix single landed the group their sole entry on the Dance Club Play list at #20. Internationally, "You Got It" topped the singles chart in both Australia and the UK for three weeks, peaked in the runner-up spot in neighborly New Zealand and Ireland, and stopped at #11 in Spain and #12 in Germany.
