Pop Sweep: November 10, 2012...

It's time to kick off today's "chart sweeps" of the newest songs making their way on to this week's music singles charts in Billboard magazine. I'll start with the latest on the big chart, the Hot 100, and the pop radio charts...

On the Hot 100 this week, Maroon 5 stay on top for a seventh week with "One More Night"...

There are nine new songs on the chart this week, and seven of them are from just two albums. Taylor Swift's Red sold over a million copies last week, and besides that, fans also bought individual songs instead. Out of the five tracks debuting, the biggest one is "22" which comes ironically in at #44. It's one of the total pop-oriented tracks on the CD, and it's typically post-Disney fare...

..and at #65 is "I Almost Do", a more "country-ish" song, if that means that there's an acoustic guitar in it...

Coming in at #67 is "Everything Has Changed", her collaboration with British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran. I think it's a laugh that this track is bascially the same as the previous one with the acoustic guitars as such, but Billboard doesn't deem it "country-worthy". Lord.

"All Too Well" is at #80, and apparently this is "country-worthy", though again this isn't structurally or instrumentally different from the previous two...

Lastly, Taylor's "Stay Stay Stay" pops in at #91. Now this one sounds totally like a pop song to me, though the magazine apparently disagrees (just because the subtle mandolin-like plucking?)...but the backbeat is totally General Public's "Tenderness"...

Now the second-biggest selling album this past week was by rapper Kendrick Lamar, and two of his tracks join his now top-40 hit "Swimming Pools (Drank)", which leaps to #32 this week. First, the song "Poetic Justice" featuring Drake comes in at #76. It builds on the backdrop of Janet Jackson's "Anytime, Anyplace"....(NSFW)

His other entry is "m.A.A.d. City", featuring MC Eiht at #94.

As for the other two debuts, the first is from the ABC musical Nashville, and it's the first from the show to make the big chart. It's "Fade Into You" by stars Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen at #92....

...and at #95 is rapper Meek Mill with "Young & Gettin' It" featuring Kirko Bangz, the second song to make the big chart from his Dreams & Nightmares debut album. "Amen" made it to #57 earlier this summer...(NSFW)

Meanwhile over on the Adult-top-40 radio format chart, Maroon 5's "One More Night" moves back into th #1 spot for a second non-consecutive week...

Pink has the highest entry at #29 with her latest single "Try", the followup to "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)", which went to #1 on this chart for five weeks this past fall...I gotta give props to her dancing skills on this video...

Chris Brown is in at #36 with his dance-pop hit "Don't Wake Me Up". His personal best on this chart so far was "No Air" with Jordin Sparks, which peaked at #12 in 2008...

..and Jason Mraz arrives at #40 with the second single from his album Love Is A Four Letter Word, "93 Million Miles". It's the kind of thoughtful ballad he does so well, and it's a fitting lyrics for these tough times on the East Coast. Jason took "I'm Yours" to #1 here in 2008..

Finally, on the Adult-Contemporary Chart, Gotye and Kimbra won't let go of #1 for a thirteenth week with "Somebody That I Used To Know"...

Boston rockers Aerosmith enter at #28 with "What Could Have Been Love". It's only their second time on this more sedate format, "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" went to #13 in 2001, and this is basically a rewrite of that powerballad...

..and Chris Mann, who came in fourth on last season's The Voice, scores his first radio hit at #30 with "Roads". He was my favorite vocals-wise on the show, and I'm quite happy with this inspiring song...

That does it for this first part...I'll return in 90 minutes with the latest on rock radio...in the meanwhile you can check out my personal top-100 chart for the week by clicking here...
