Songoftheday 11/4/12 - I can see that it won't be long, you grow cold when you keep holding on...

Frida - "I Know There's Something Going On"
from the album Something's Going On (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #13 (three weeks)
Weeks in the top-40: 12

Today's Song of the Day is by former ABBA "A" Frida, who actually is Norwegian by birth and half-German in heredity, and only Swedish in adopted home as a child. Born Anni-Frid Lyngstad, she started out as a pop singer in the schlager tradtition (a light fluffy style of pop music wildly popular in Europe). She even had a couple of #1 hits in Sweden between the late 60s and early 70s (here's one of them).

After that Frida and her boyfriend/producer Benny Andersson joined with Agnetha Faltskog and Bjorn Ulvaeus to make ABBA in 1972. The band was huge around the world, and even had an American #1 hit with "Dancing Queen".. But as the then-married to Benny Frida's marriage and musical partnership dissolved, the band split, with both Frida and Agnetha pursuing solo careers.

In 1982 Frida recorded her first solo English-language album, Something's Going On, with Genesis drummer and solo act in his own right Phil Collins handling the production with Hugh Padgham. The first single, "I Know There's Something Going On" features Collins' signature drum riff that sounds like a variation of his "In The Air Tonight" beat, with Russ Ballard's paranoiac lyrics a backdrop to her failed romance.

The single made the top-20 on the pop chart in the US, becoming the bigger hit of the two ABBA ladies. It also reached the top-20 of the rock radio chart, far removing her from her old band's disco ways. It would be her last American pop chart hit, though she did "bubble under" the chart with a followup, "Here We'll Stay" a duet with Phil.

Eventually Frida would marry a Swiss member of the German royalty, so now she's a "countess" (though not a "queen")...
