Twostepcub's New Music Roundup 11/12/22...

Happy Veteran's/Remembrance/Armistice Day folks, it's time for my weekly choices of the songs making their debut on the various singles charts in Billboard magazine as well as the British Official Charts. It's a particularly "slow" week, with a lot of the newbies songs I've already covered, but there are still some notable additions...

"The Astronaut" - JIN (from BTS)
from the single (2022)
Billboard Hot 100 debut: #51
British Singles debut: #61

Kim Seok-jin, aka JIN from the massively popular K-pop group BTS, strikes out on his own with this English/Korean-language single as the group is on a "hiatus". Well, not totally on his own, as this is co-written by the members of the modern rock band Coldplay, who give this song a sheen and a groove that separates itself from the norm in the genre. Norwegian DJ Kygo's production is thankfully far from his usual trop-house and more of an 80's retro vibe.

"Big Old Nowhere" - Aliens Don't Ring Doorbells
from the single (2022)
Billboard Adult Contemporary debut: #23

The multinational eclectic pop group deliver this peppy pop nugget that hearkens back to the post-punk days of Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and Squeeze.

"The Loneliest" - Maneskin
from the album Rush! (2023)
Billboard Rock & Alternative Airplay debut: #40

Italy's Eurovision Song Contest-winning band are back with the lead single from their third album and first full-length set since their triumph last year. They go full-on power-ballad, for something to wallow in your isolated sorrows with.

"Filthy" - Ayron Jones
from the single (2022)
Billboard Rock & Alternative Airplay debut: #44

Seattle-based rocker had three top-five hits on the Mainstream Rock radio chart from his third album Child Of The State. This new single brings in the best of grunge from his home city and infuses it with snarling performance that'll have you banging your head.

"Scared Together" - Silversun Pickups
from the album Physical Thrills (2022)
Billboard Rock & Alternative Airplay debut: #45

Brian Aubert takes lead on this new one from the Los Angeles band that veers off their original sound to an electro-rock stomp that's suited for the early-setting sun.

"Becoming" - Volbeat
from the album Servant Of The Mind (2021)
Billboard Rock & Alternative Airplay debut: #46

The Danish saviors of traditional heavy metal do no wrong with their fifth single from their 2021 album. The chorus has an immediate melodic touch, and their harmonies contrast the darker verse passages.

"Nobody Wants To Die" - Rival Sons
from the album Darkfighter (2023)
Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay debut: #32

The California blues-rock outfit preview their upcoming seventh album with this rollicking track that sports an entertaining music video that's like a western version of "Sabotage".

"Golden" - Crobot
from the album Feel This (2022)
Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay debut: #39

Pottsville, Pennsylvania's stoner rockers channel Soundgarden in the "Black Hole Sun" area with this meaty bit of psychedelic metal.

"A Tip From You To Me" - Jack White
from the album Entering Heaven Alive (2022)
Billboard Alternative Rock Airplay debut: #30

The former White Stripes/Raconteurs/Dead Weather journeyman released two albums this year, and this is the first track on the second, a thoughtful piece that musically will cause comparisons to Led Zeppelin, but not in a bad way.

"Then It All Goes Away" - Dayglow
from the album People In Motion (2022)
Billboard Alternative Rock Airplay debut: #34

Texan musician Sloan Struble's Dayglow project returns with this breezy alt-pop single that's fit for a good car ride playlist.

"Evergreen" - Mt. Joy
from the album Orange Blood (2022)
Billboard Adult Alternative (Triple-A) Airplay debut: #34

Meanwhile, this song from the Philly alt-rock band is perfect for a walk/run and has a eye-grabbing video featuring Creed Bratton from The Office.

"Bad Thing" - Miya Folick
from the EP 2007 (2022)
Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay debut: #39

There's relatively few women making it this week, but this indie-rock singer/songwriter more than makes of for it with this hypnotic wall of sound that's pure pop bliss.

"Every Shade Of Blue" - The Head and the Heart
from the album Every Shade Of Blue (2022)
Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay debut: #40

With so little making the "pop" radio charts, the rock stations pick up the slack for some well-crafted songs like this title track from the group's fifth album.

"Nothing Even Matters" - SiR
from the single (2022)
Billboard Adult R&B Airplay debut: #27

Critic fave updates the neo-soul sound for 2022 with this juicy jazz-soul piece that sounds like what John Legend really should be doing now.

"Get To You" - Noel Gourdin
from the single (2022)
Billboard Adult R&B Airplay debut: #30

A full 14 years since his breakthrough hit "The River", Gourdin is finally back with this smooth as silk jam to wind down your night but not put you to sleep.

"All Mine" - Brent Faiyaz
from the album Wasteland (2022)
Billboard Rhythmic Airplay debut: #40

Perhaps with the success of alt-soul artist Steve Lacy will give Faiyaz the attention he deserves for his 2022, with this moody new single that's pretty dreamy.

"Just Say" - Coco & Breezy featuring Tara Carosielli
from the single (2022)
Billboard Dance Airplay debut: #33

OK I had reservations about this twin sister fashionistas gone to club music, but this understated but funky as fuck track is ripe for your next house party.

"Wild Grey Ocean" - Sam Fender
from the album Seventeen Going Under (Live Deluxe Edition) (2022)
British Singles debut: #71

I have no idea why Fender hasn't made a big impression in America - perhaps radio thinks they only have room for one emotive guy singer, and Lewis Capaldi exists. But that's a pity, Sam hasn't hit a bad note since this start and this expansive midtempo track is a great headphone listen.

"Feel It Comin" - Lady Blackbird
from the album Black Acid Soul (Deluxe Edition) (2022)
British Airplay debut: #18
British Singles sales debut: #39

Hands down my favorite new song of the week. American expatriate lounge singer gets a makeover with this Motown-inspired flood of emotion that bowled over the audience on the Graham Norton Show. The second disc of her deluxe album, all remixes and this new classic that slyly addresses trans issues, are all choice, but this just puts me in tears. Highly recommended.

"Pretty Boy" - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds
from the single (2022)
British Singles sales debut: #25

This new song from the former Oasis king of Britpop also addresses LGBT+ issues, with a poignant video to accompany the stark driving message of the lyrics of the song. Also a great addition.

There we have it. I'll be back tomorrow with my choices of the albums making this week's charts.
