from the album Pull My Chain (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7

Today's song comes from country music artist Toby Keith, whose fifth studio album, and the first on DreamWorks Records, How Do You Like Me Now?, scored his first two crossover top-40 hits on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart, with "How Do You Like Me Now?" and "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This", the latter in the spring of 2001. A couple of months later, Toby returned with the lead single from his next release, Pull My Chain. "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight", written by Toby with frequent collaborator Scotty Emerick, and produced by the singer with James Stroud, is a smooth but crude offer of a one-night stand to a lady at a bar. He sings about how he's there to show her a good time, but only in the short run. And when she says she wants to find a husband, he puts on the brakes. Classy. His point of view is summed up in the line "I'm just talkin' 'bout two lonely people who might reach a little understanding". It's a comedic foil, which he can do well, though it is on the verge of being smarmy. And luckily, the production behind it has the right combination of traditional country and booming bass drum to make it a fun ride, and for the subject matter, most of us have been there before. Football icon Terry Bradshaw makes a cameo in the music video...

"I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight" became Toby's third top-40 crossover hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in September of 2001. The song spent a week at #1 on the Country Airplay chart as well. The Pull My Chain album, released in August of that year, peaked at #9 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and topped the Country Albums list for a week as well, spending two years on the latter and going on to sell over two million copies. Both Toby and the album will be back to the series.
