Songoftheday 9/24/21 - Yesterday was not just another day not like before, yesterday I saw your smilin' face love walked through my door...

from the album Mya (1998)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #28 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 2

Today's song is from R&B singer Mya, who in less than a year scored five top-40 pop hits between the top ten single "It's All About Me" and follow-up "Movin' On" from her self-titled debut album, two soundtrack cuts in "Ghetto Superstar" and "Take Me There", and a featured stint on rapper Silkk The Shocker's double-sided hit "Somebody Like Me".  The third release from Mya's debut was "My First Night With You". Written by Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds and Diane Warren and produced by Daryl Simmons, the song was first released as an album cut by Deborah Cox in 1995. Listening to it again, I can see why Cox left it as an album cut; for such powerhouse musical giants like Babyface and Warren, the song is rather soft and bland. It's not offensively bad, but it's the usual new love tripe. With Mya's voice not even matching that of Cox, it makes it even more so. But nevertheless, it fit to soften her sound on the radio, and with a "loving the bad boy" music video that featured Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (aka Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington from Welcome Back Kotter) as the dad, Mya found herself back in the top-40...

"My First Night Without You" became Mya's third top-40 pop hit from her first album, and sixth overall, in April of 1999. The song climbed to the same rank, #28 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, and #9 on their "Rhythmic" radio format list. The dance transformations of the song, mixed by the likes of Soul Solution and Fernando G, helped the song get to #26 on the Dance Club Play list. Mya will be back to the series.
