Songoftheday 9/25/21 -Between your legs loud and clear I wanna talk back to her, make love to her I wanna hear you scream my name...

"Anywhere" - 112 featuring Lil' Z
from the album Room 112 (1998) and Young World: The Future (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 18

Today's song comes from the R&B vocal group 112, who had returned to the pop top-40 in the fall of 1998 with the lead single from their second album Room 112, "Love Me".  That record featured rapper Mase, who at the time was red-hot in the music world. For their follow-up, the quartet would also feature a rapper, but in this case a newcomer, a very young newcomer. Lil' Z, aka Zane Copeland Jr, grew up and started his career in Atlanta, Georgia, and was only sixteen years old when he appeared on "Anywhere", 112's second release from the Room 112 set. Written by the group's Daron Jones (who produced), Mike Keith, Marvin Scandrick, and Quinnes Parker, along with Copeland, Jason Boyd, and Lamont Maxwell, the song basically has them singing that they'll "do the deed" with you anywhere, like in any room of the house (with Lil Z' taking a detour to the car). It's explicit without getting profane (see the verses titling this post), and there is no question what they want. This is all over the skittish backbeat that was prevalent on the genre in the late 1990's. Of course, knowing that Zane was sixteen makes this kind of cringey, especially when the music video puts 112 and the rapper in the white party of strip clubs...

"Anywhere" became 112's fifth top-40 pop hit, and Zane's first, in May of 1999. The song also climbed to #5 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart. Internationally, the single was a top-40 hit in New Zealand at #36. The song would also go on to appear on Lil' Z's debut album Young World: The Future, which by then he would go by Lil Zane. Both 112 and Lil Zane will be back to the series, together, in switched roles.
