"All Night Long" - Faith Evans featuring Puff Daddy
from the album Keep The Faith (1998)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song comes from R&B singer Faith Evans, whose lead single from her sophomore album Keep The Faith, "Love Like This", landed in the American pop top ten at the close of 1998. Faith also appeared on the huge pop/R&B smash from Whitney Houston, "Heartbreak Hotel", in the spring of 1999. The second release from the record would be "All Night Long", which reunited her with her label boss Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs, with whom she topped the charts with in 1997 with the tribute to her late ex-husband Christopher "Notorious B.I.G." Wallace, "I'll Be Missing You". The song was written by Evans and Combs with co-producer Ron Lawrence, and was grounded on a sample of "I Hear Music In The Streets" by the disco-soul group Unlimited Touch, written by Bert Reed and Galen Underwood, which went to #6 on Billboard magazine's Disco chart in 1980. That interpolation brings a funk much like Nile Rodgers' Chic to the track, as Faith sings lyrics mirroring Chic's own "Good Times". A smooth party record with no other aspirations, the song worked for the club as well as the radio, and Evans found herself with another big hit...
"All Night Long" became Faith's third consecutive, and so far last, top ten pop hit as a lead artist in April of 1999. The song spent two weeks at #3 on Billboard's R&B chart, while the remixes of the song helped it rise to #4 on the Dance Club Play list. Internationally, the single was a top-40 hit in Canada (#13), the UK (#23) and New Zealand (#29). Faith, and this album, will return to this series.
