"For A Little While" - Tim McGraw
from the album Everywhere (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #37 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 2
Today's song comes from country music star Tim McGraw, whose fourth studio album Everywhere had scored a top ten pop hit with his duet ballad with wife Faith Hill, "It's Your Love", in the summer of 1997. That was followed by the title track "Everywhere", which topped Billboard magazine's Country Singles chart for two weeks, which in turn was succeeded by "Just To See You Smile", which spent six weeks on top of that list. The heartwrenching ballad "One Of These Days" was released as a cassette single, and popped on to the Hot 100 pop chart at #74, while taking a week at #2 on the Country Singles radio list. Then came "Where The Green Grass Grows", which spent a month (four weeks) at #1 on the Country Singles chart, and peaking at #79 on the Hot 100. Also, the album cut "You Turn Me On" got enough unsolicited radio play to appear on the Country Airplay chart at #75 for a couple weeks.
With that much momentum, Tim and Curb Records released a sixth single (and seventh cut to make radio overall) from Everywhere. "For A Little While", an epic sweeping uptempo song about a past love that he doesn't regret, was written by Steve Mandite, Jerry Vandiver, and Phil Vassar (the latter of whom will appear in this series himself). Produced by Byron Gallimore and Phil Stroud, the record features prominent chiming piano flourishes like a Bruce Hornsby record, while keeping the fiddle front and center as well, as McGraw goes on about how great it was to be with her, if not forever...
"For A Little While" returned McGraw to the Hot 100 top-40 in February of 1999. The song also spent a week at #2 on Billboard's Country Songs chart. Internationally, the single topped the Canadian country chart. It would be the last release from Everywhere, but Tim will return many times to this series.
