Robbed hit of the week 8/30/21 - Barenaked Ladies' "It's All Been Done"...

"It's All Been Done" - Barenaked Ladies
from the album Stunt (1998)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #44

This week's "robbed hit" comes from the Canadian band Barenaked Ladies, whose breakthrough single "One Week" topped the pop chart in America for one week in the fall of 1998.  There were good prospects for their followup, "It's All Been Done", which topped the Canadian singles charts where "One Week" only made it to #3. Written by the group's Steven Page, and produced by the band with David Leonard and Susan Rogers, the uptempo rocker doesn't rely on gimmicks, and is a straight-in-your-face power-pop gem with the guitar powerchords and singalong chorus intact. It even sported a totally adorbs music video in the viewpoint of various pets who carouse around a house party...

While "It's All Been Done" climbed to #9 on Billboard magazine's Adult Top-40 radio chart, and #15 on the Alternative Rock format list, the single stalled a few notches below the pop Top-40 in January of 1999. Internationally, besides topping the list in their homeland, the single made the top-40 in the UK (#28) and Iceland (#37). A third single from the set, "Call And Answer", got to #17 on the Adult Top-40 tally, while "bubbling under" the pop Hot 100 at #121. Both deserved better.
