Songoftheday 8/17/21 - I'm standing here looking in the mirror saying "Damn" to myself, I should have known the day would come that she would find somebody else...
"When A Woman's Fed Up" - R. Kelly
from the album R. (1998)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #22 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13
Today's song comes from R&B singer/songwriter/producer/alleged sex criminal R. Kelly, whose third solo album R. had granted him a #1 hit with his duet with Celine Dion, "I'm Your Angel", in December of 1998. That same week, another album cut, "Home Alone" featuring rapper Keith Murray, entered the Hot 100, where it peaked at #65, then on the R&B chart, where it made the top-40 at #22. Later that month, another song from R., "When A Woman's Fed Up", entered the list as well. Written and produced by Kelly, it's a downtempo groove that clearly tries to emulate the sound the his former (child) wife Aaliyah was creating with Timbaland and Missy Elliott. Told from the perspective of a man who's done his woman wrong and being kicked out of the house (name-checking Erykah Badu's "Tyrone" in the process), and realizes its him that has caused this with all the bad shit he's done. It's actually kind of done well in that aspect, and by the end he's resigned but still is making that one last pitch for forgiveness he knows he won't get. The music video continues the storyline from his protege Sparkle's top-40 hit "Be Careful"...(the video's been pulled on YouTube...)
"When A Woman's Fed Up" became the second top-40 pop hit from R. in February of 1999. The song climbed to #5 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart as well. Internationally, the single reached the top-40 in New Zealand (#14), the UK (#24), Germany (#25), and the Netherlands (#25). At the Grammy Awards in 2000, Kelly was nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal for the track, losing out to Barry White for his "Staying Power" song. Kelly and R. will be back on this series.
