Songoftheday 7/7/19 - Things haven't been the same since you came into my life, you found a way to touch my soul and I'm never, ever, ever gonna let it go,,,

"Secret" - Madonna
from the album Bedtime Stories (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 20

Today's song of the day comes from Madonna, who had come off her daring album Erotica, which sold millions of copies and spun off four top-40 pop hits, including two top ten single in "Erotica" and "Deeper and Deeper", but part of the set's overt sexuality, paired with the fallout from her Sex book, and was critically put with mixed reviews. Taking a hard left, Madonna returned in the spring of 1994 with the soft ballad "I'll Remember" from the movie With Honors, which put her at #2 on the pop chart, and maybe softened some of her fans put off by the Sex turn. Later that year, Madonna released her sixth studio album Bedtime Stories. Despite the title, the album was much more varied and nuanced beyond the singles, and working with a myriad of styles helped greatly. The lead single from the set, "Secret", was a slinky soul number written and produced by Madonna with Dallas Austin, and the restrained groove of the song definitely sold its sensuality from the beginning acoustic guitar strum and Madonna's multitracked cooing...

"Secret" reached the top three on the American pop chart in November of 1994. The song spent five weeks at #2 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio format chart, lingering on the list for half a year (26 weeks). The remixes of the song helped the track top their Dance Club Play chart for two weeks as well. Internationally, the single went to #1 for three weeks in Canada, as well as topping the lists in Switzerland and Finland, and reached the top ten in France (#2), Italy (#3), Spain (#4), Australia (#5), New Zealand (#5), Denmark (#6), and Iceland (#7). It also peaked at #29 in Germany, #16 in Ireland, and #12 in Sweden.
