"Thuggish Ruggish Bone" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony
from the extended play EP Creepin on ah Come Up (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #22 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 15

Today's song of the day comes from the Cleveland rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, who came together in the early 1990s. As one of their early names, B.O.N.E. Enterprise, the then-foursome gave themselves matching monikers (Anthony Henderson as Krayzie Bone, Bryon McCane as Bizzy Bone, Steven Howse as Layzie Bone, and Charles Scruggs as Wish Bone) as they sought to get a record deal. Eventually, they hooked up with former N.W.A. member Eazy-E on his Ruthless label, with Steven's brother Stanley Howse ("Flesh N Bone")  also contributing to their debut eight-song EP Creepin On Ah Come Up, which was released in 1994. The lead single from the record was a gangsta-rap anthem that sounded truly from Compton, not from Cleveland, with the production from DJ U-Neek providing a sound as close to Death Row as they could, but perhaps more involved with all four "official" "Bones" along with singer Shatasha Williams getting ample space on the single...

"Thuggish Ruggish Bone" became Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's first hit and breakthrough single, reaching the pop top-40 in November of 1994. The song also climbed to #17 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, while it topped out at #2 on their Rap Singles chart. Internationally, the single peaked at #2 in New Zealand, a hotbed for the genre's reception into the mainstream. A second single from Creepin', "Foe The Love Of $", which featured Flesh-N-Bone as well as Eazy-E on a verse (and on the video right before his death), just missed the pop top-40 at #41, while climbing to #33 on the R&B chart at #4 on the Rap Singles list.

And here's the group (with Statasha) performing on MTV's The Grind to promote the single in 1994...

Finally, the guys live in Las Vegas from a few years ago at a gig for Beats headphones...

Up tomorrow: Jersey rockers profess their steadfast love (although not to their bass player).
