Thompson Twins - "Lay Your Hands On Me"
from the album Here's To Future Days (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14
Today's Song of the Day is by the British new wave group Thompson Twins, whose 1984 album Into The Gap scored them two big hits in America with "Hold Me Now" and "Doctor! Doctor!". After an appearance at the Live Aid charity concert and a cancelled tour due to lead singer Tom Bailey's collapse from exhaustion, the trio released their third album, Here's To Future Days, in 1985. Produced by Chic's Nile Rodgers along with Bailey, the record expanded their sound, and the first result of the project was "Lay Your Hands On Me". Originally recorded in 1984 with former producer Alex Sadkin, Rodgers added a guitar and a gospel choir at the end, improving the record in droves...
"Lay Your Hands On Me" became the Twins' second top-10 pop hit in America in November of 1985, while climbing to #14 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary radio chart. The record even snuck on to the dance club play chart at #46. Internationally, the single was a hit, and in England, where the original Sadkin production was released in 1984, it peaked at #13, and in Canada, it went to #8.
