Songoftheday 6/8/14 - We sit in the car outside your house you're quiet I can feel the heat coming 'round...

Bruce Springsteen - "I'm Goin' Down"
from the album Born In The U.S.A. (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9

Today's Song of the Day is by "The Boss", Bruce Springsteen, whose landmark album Born In The U.S.A. had already spun off five top-10 pop singles with "Dancing In The Dark", "Cover Me", "I'm On Fire", "Glory Days", and the title track. It was one of the few albums of the time to do that, but only one, Michael Jackson's Thriller, managed to go further, generating seven top-10 hits. So it was a big moment when Bruce released the sixth single, "I'm Goin' Down", even though it was one of the lesser of the album track - in fact it almost didn't make the cut in favor of "Pink Cadillac" on the album. But yet in those days he could do no wrong, and the song's fun swagger carried an actual emotional yet real thought process about relationships...

"I'm Goin' Down" followed the other five hits to become the sixth top-10 pop single from Born In The USA in October of 1985, while reaching the same mark on the Mainstream Rock radio chart in Billboard. Internationally, the single was a minor hit, reaching the top-40 in Canada, one rung from that level at #41 in Australia, and in the lower half of the chart in Germany.

Since then, although I loved the song in the album, I'd allow that it probably is the last in importance of the seven hits from the set.
