Robbed hit of the week 6/16/14 - DeBarge's "You Wear It Well"...
El DeBarge with DeBarge - "You Wear It Well"
from the album Rhythm Of The Night (from DeBarge) (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #46
This week's 'robbed hit' comes from the family soul group DeBarge, whose dance/pop inflected album Rhythm Of The Night had scored them their first two pop top-10 hits with "Who's Holding Donna Now" and the title track. However, as drugs and aspirations were tearing the family apart, with both Bunny and El soon to be leaving for solo careers. Motown's priorities were definitely shown with their next single from the album, "You Wear It Well", which credited El DeBarge as the lead artist....
"You Wear It Well" fell short of the pop top-40 when it peaked at #46 in October of 1985, though it became the group's first and only #1 dance club hit. The record also reliably performed well on R&B stations, reaching #7 on the genre chart in Billboard magazine. It also was a minor hit in the UK, climbing to #54.
They would release one more single from the album, "The Heart Is So Smart" (also lead-credited to El), before he left to release his first solo album in 1986.
