Songoftheday 6/17/14 - The moon comes up and the music calls, you're gettin' tired of starin' at the same four walls...

Glenn Frey - "You Belong To The City"
from the album Miami Vice (Original Soundtrack) (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's Song of the Day comes from former Eagles frontman Glenn Frey, who had last dabbled with his new image, going from muscle dork in "Sexy Girl" to drug-runner cool in "Smuggler's Blues". So when the hit TV show Miami Vice came around, Frey's look and sound was a custom fit, and not only did they use "Smuggler's Blues" in an episode, they commissioned Glenn and co-writer Jack Tempchin to write another new song for the soundtrack, and even have Glenn star on the show in an episode. The new track, "You Belong To The City", was an ultra-sleek synth and sax number that sounds miles away from his country/rock fare with his old band, though it did resemble his "robbed hit" "All Those Lies" quite a bit...

"You Belong To The City" went to the runner-up spot on the Hot 100 chart in America in November of 1985, tying his mark with "The Heat Is On" for his biggest solo hit. The single climbed all the way to #1 on Billboard magazine's Mainstream Rock radio chart, and stopped at #2 on the adult contemporary list. Internationally, the record went to #6 in Canada, and #20 in Australia.

Here's Glenn live in 1995...

In 1997, rapper Jay-Z and vocal group Blackstreet interpolated "You Belong To The City" for his single "The City Is Mine", which went to #38 on the British singles chart (where Glenn's never even made an appearance) and #52 on the American pop chart...

Up tomorrow: If you ask me for my most disliked hit song of all time, this will always be my answer.
