Songoftheday 10/12/13 - Give me two strong arms to protect myself, give me so much love that I forget myself...
Eurythmics - "Right By Your Side"
from the album Touch (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #29 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 5
Today's Song of the Day is by the British new-wave duo Eurythmics, whose third album Touch had already spin off a top-10 hit with "Here Comes The Rain Again" and a top-30 follow-up with "Who's That Girl". For their third release (and second in the UK after "Who's.."), Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart put out a record that sounded like nothing they've done on since their overlooked debut album, the sunny, calypso-driven "Right By Your Side", which is arguably the happiest track they've ever done. However, if you get into the "meat" of the lyrics, you can still find their biting wit intact (hence the "when depression starts to win" tagline)..
"Right By Your Side" racked up a fifth top-40 US pop hit for the pair in September of 1984, while also doing the same on the American dance chart. In Britain, where the single was released before "Here Comes The Rain Again", the record was their fourth consecutive top-10 hit. It also made the top-10 in New Zealand, and top-20 in Australia, Sweden, and Ireland.
